What the Camden Accessibility Pledge is
If you run a licensed venue in Camden, the Camden Accessibility Pledge, created in partnership with Attitude is Everything, is an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to accessible practice under the Equality Act 2010. It's drawn from best-practice accessibility standards in the Live Events Access Charter and the Grassroots and Community Accessibility Framework. It has been tailored for Camden premises licensed under the Licensing Act 2003.
The pledge supports all licensed venues to make practical improvements to accessibility, including:
- better access
- communication
- staff awareness
- engagement with disabled customers
By signing up to the pledge, you make a clear public commitment to improving access for disabled people and customers with access needs, while helping to create safer, more inclusive and welcoming spaces across the borough.
Reasons to join the pledge
Our licensed venues are central to the borough’s cultural, hospitality and night-time economy. The pledge has been developed to support venues in strengthening accessibility as part of day-to-day operations and customer experience.
What you’re committing to
When you sign the Camden Accessibility Pledge, your venue commits to four core standards.
- Accessibility as standard practice
- Transparency and clarity
- Inclusive and respectful service
- Leadership and accountability
The pledge helps venues address physical, communication and attitudinal barriers practically, while recognising that premises across Camden vary in size, layout and building type.
Venues can also consider joining Attitude is Everything’s Live Events Access Charter to take their practice further.
Who can take part
The pledge is open to all premises operating in the London Borough of Camden, including pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and other hospitality or cultural venues.
How the pledge works
Step 1: Complete a simple self-assessment
Use the following guidance to implement meaningful changes and then complete the checklist and Access Policy Template. This will help you review your current accessibility arrangements and identify any areas for improvement.
- Camden’s Accessibility Pledge Guidance (PDF)
- Camden’s Accessibility Pledge Checklist (DOCX)
- Small Premises Access Information Guide (PDF)
- Access Policy Template (DOCX)
The completed checklist and access policy must be emailed to [email protected]. After this, an assessment is carried out by trained officers.
Step 2: Council review
Officers will visit participating venues to assess and confirm the accessibility provisions in place.
Step 3: Recognition for participating venues
Venues that meet the requirements will benefit from public recognition through:
- inclusion on the Council website
- window stickers for display at the premises
- digital badges for use online
- promotion through Camden communications
This gives operators a clear way to show customers and the wider community that accessibility is part of how their venue is run.
Important information for licence holders
The Camden Accessibility Pledge is voluntary. It:
- does not form part of Camden’s Statement of Licensing Policy
- does not create new licensing requirements
- does not replace or override duties under the Equality Act 2010
- will not be taken into account when determining licence applications, variations, reviews, or enforcement decisions
The pledge provides a shared framework for promoting responsible management and inclusive access across Camden’s licensed sector.
