Heating, hot water and cooking gas supplied by Camden

If your home is connected to a Camden heat network, this means we supply your:

  • heating
  • hot water
  • cooking gas, in some cases

A heat network is shared between several homes. We own, maintain and operate these heating systems.

Paying for your heating

Tenants

We divide the annual heat charge into weekly payments. This helps you budget by avoiding higher costs in winter.

Leaseholders and freeholders

You pay for heating as part of your service charges. There may be an additional charge for repairs not covered by a maintenance contract.

How your heating charges are calculated

Homes with heat meters

Heat meters measure the energy used for heating and hot water in your home.

This means:

  • you're charged for the energy you use
  • you can monitor your energy use through your Camden account
  • you can identify opportunities to reduce energy use

We install heat meters whenever it’s technically possible and cost-effective.

Homes without heat meters

Council tenants

We forecast annual energy costs for the Cabinet to review and approve. See decision details from the Housing Revenue Account (HRA) Budget and Rent Review 2026/27

Charges vary depending on:

  • the type of heating system serving your home
  • whether heating, hot water or cooking gas is provided
  • the number of bedrooms in your property

We charge a fixed amount. You do not receive adjustments for actual usage.

Leaseholders and freeholders

Charges are based on the:

  • total cost of supplying the heating system serving your home
  • type of heating service provided
  • hours used per day
  • number of bedrooms in your property

Energy and money saving advice

Council tenants can contact the Home Energy Advice Team to set up a 'warm and well' home visit.

Disconnecting or changing your supplier

Heating network

Camden heat networks are an important part of our plans to reduce carbon emissions. Tenants and leaseholders cannot:

  • disconnect the heating
  • install an alternative heat source
  • switch to an alternative supplier

It may be a breach of your tenancy or lease agreement.

Gas network

Tenants and leaseholders cannot disconnect from or opt out of the gas network for their heating. This is because:

  • Cadent would need to install a new gas pipe, which is not cost-effective
  • fuel costs from the new supplier are likely to be higher for the resident
  • residents still on the heating network would have higher charges due to our reduced negotiating power

Cooking gas

You can ask to switch from cooking gas to electricity.

Before we approve this, we check that the building's electrical system can support the change.

Disconnecting freehold properties

Freehold property owners can ask to be disconnected from the network.

Repairing and maintaining the heat network

We repair and replace heat network components in your home.

Report a repair.

Repairing a leaseholder or freeholder-owned boiler

If we supply gas to your own boiler, you're responsible for repairing and maintaining it.

Complaints process

If you’re not happy with our service, you can make a complaint.

You can contact the Housing Ombudsman at any stage of the complaints process.
