Home contents insurance for council tenants

As your landlord, we are responsible for insuring your building. You are responsible for insuring your belongings.  

It’s always a good idea to compare policies to find the right cover. 

What contents insurance covers 

Home contents insurance can protect your belongings from risks such as fire, theft or water damage. This includes contents such as: 

  • furniture 
  • carpets 
  • curtains 
  • clothes 
  • bedding 
  • electrical items 
  • pictures 
  • ornaments 

You should check the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions before you take out a policy. 

Reasons to choose our insurance policy 

We’ve partnered with Thistle Tenant Risks to offer home contents insurance to our social housing tenants. This includes: 

  • cover for loss or damage to your contents caused by specific events such as theft, water damage, fire and other household risks 
  • up to 35% of the total cost of replacing your landlord's fixtures and fittings which you are legally liable for 
  • up to £3,000 cover for theft or attempted theft of contents in sheds, outbuildings and garages that form part of your home 
  • cover for damage to external glazing that you’re responsible for 
  • up to £500 for replacement and installation of locks for outside doors or windows and alarms if keys are lost or stolen 
  • no need to install special door or window locks, just an outside door lock
