Car free housing

This is the improved Camden website. Tell us what you think.

Car free housing

Car-free housing schemes generally have no car parking within the site and occupiers are not issued with on-street parking permits. However, allowances can be made for people with disabilities who are blue badge holders.

Car-free developments are secured through planning agreements between us and developers through Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1990.

We encourage car-free development in locations that are:

  • In the Central London area
  • In our town centres
  • In other areas which are easily accessible by public transport
  • Within highly stressed controlled parking zones

Car-free development helps to:

  • Make Camden a less car dependant place to live, work and visit
  • Reduce traffic congestion and pollution
  • Improve the quality of the environment
  • Encourage more sustainable and efficient travel (on foot, by cycle, and by public transport)

Car-free development is supported by the National Planning Policy Framework.  It is also supported at a regional and local level by the following:

  • London Plan
  • Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy
  • Camden Core Strategy (CS11 – Promoting sustainable and efficient travel)
  • Camden Development Policies (DP18 – Parking standards and limiting the availability of car parking)
  • Camden Transport Strategy
  • Camden Planning Guidance (CPG7 Transport)
