Voter registration
Each time you move property, you need to register to vote again. Sometimes, people who are in short term tenancies, or move around a lot don’t register to vote. It is important that wherever you live, your voice is heard when it comes to political issues and policies.
Who can register and how?
You must be over the age of 16 to register to vote in England. However, you cannot vote until you turn 18. You must also fall in to one or more of the following categories
- you are a British Citizen
- you are an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
- you are a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
You can register online through the government website, or request a paper voter registration
Voter ID at polling stations
Voters are now required to show photographic identification at polling stations before they are given a ballot paper. Find out more about what is an acceptable form of ID and what to do if you do not have any valid photo ID.
