Mr Kimpiatu’s story – a private tenant

“I was living in poor housing conditions for over 10 years which seriously affected my physical and mental health. I had a lack of daylight coming through as my home didn’t have many windows, it was very damp and had several safety issues,” said private tenant Mr Kimpiatu.

Our private rented sector team receives over 60 complaints a month concerning conditions in privately rented properties. Where landlords are found to not be managing their flats properly or carrying out suitable repairs, the team can take enforcement action including the service of improvement notices, issuing financial penalty notices, or prosecuting in the magistrates’ court.

Mr Kimpiatu, a private tenant, was renting a property which was in severe disrepair and unlicensed. Following an inspection from the Council, formal action was taken against the landlord and Mr Kimpiatu was assisted in getting rehoused.

“The Council came and visited my flat. They saw the condition of the house and made me understand I couldn’t stay here. They took action against my landlord and helped me find a new place. I feel so much happier now.”
