In March 2021, work started on the next phase of the Abbey Regeneration Project.
This phase comprises a new Health and Community Centre, being built in partnership with Wates Construction.
The centre has been developed in consultation with residents, the NHS and the Abbey Community Centre and will replace the existing outdated centre in the second of three phases of development for the Abbey Area – all funded by the council’s Community Investment Programme.
The new community centre will provide a range of educational, recreational, cultural and social opportunities for local residents as well as a self-contained creche with direct access to an outdoor play area.
Over 60 services are provided by the Abbey Community Centre at present. These services will continue to be available to all members of the local community through the same open-door policy in place at the current centre.
At the same site, a new NHS centre will provide an essential health and wellbeing service to the community in an upgraded, modern facility designed to meet the needs of the local community and changing healthcare landscape.
As well as being a fantastic asset in its own right, this phase of the project will also deliver new public realm and landscaping, infrastructure and transport improvements as well as enabling the next phase of this ambitious regeneration project.
Councillor Danny Beales, Cabinet Member for Investing in Communities, Culture and an Inclusive Economy, commented: “At Abbey Road, we have worked closely with residents to bring this all together; 66 new council homes are already providing Camden families with more space and a better standard of living, upgraded high-quality health facilities will be there to provide care for all residents, a modern community centre will offer an abundance of social and essential services, and residents will have access to invaluable green and play spaces. These are facilities that the local community can be proud of and that will remain an asset to the community for years to come.”
