Residents on the Wendling and St Stephens close estate have voted ‘Yes’ for the redevelopment of their estate.

72.3% of eligible residents turned out to have their say, with 75.1% of residents voting ‘Yes’ to the redevelopment proposals. We will now work with the residents to deliver a brand-new estate, built to tackle local issues such as overcrowding, fuel poverty and community safety.

The recent ballot follows several years of extensive engagement with residents on the estate. The Council worked closely with residents to understand their concerns with the existing estate and worked on how redevelopment could help to address these. The residents told us about their expectations for new homes and streets, with a list of key design priorities from the people who know their community best.

The estate proposals, developed in collaboration with residents, seek to demolish the existing 1960's blocks - replacing damp, cramped properties with between 650 and 750 spacious and modern new homes, at least 40% of which will be genuinely affordable including new council homes and homes available at Camden Living Rent.

Now residents have voted ‘Yes’, the next stage is for us to work with residents to look at the layout of the new homes, streets and green spaces and think about how the new buildings could look. We will also be looking at the time-frame in which the estate will get built. Residents will continue to be involved and engaged throughout this process, helping to shape their homes and where they live.

The new estate will be the latest expansion of the Community Investment Programme, which to date has helped 1,028 Camden residents out of overcrowded accommodation, including 453 under the age of 19. It has also delivered some of the most energy efficient homes in the UK, helping tenants cut their fuel bills and carbon emissions.
