The Avalon Motorcycle Project

The Avalon Project

The Avalon Project - formerly Silverdale Motorcycle Project - is a multi-skills project, open to young people aged 13 to 19 (up to 25 years old for young people with special educational needs and disabilities) in Camden and its surrounding boroughs.

The Avalon Project has worked with hundreds of young people over the last 40 years, offering unique opportunities for those looking for practical skills in motorcycle mechanics. The Avalon has recently been through a period of change, moving to a new workshop and developing a new curriculum. Visit their website or find out more below.

Our approach

We believe in a person-centred approach to learning in small classes with high tutor to student ratios. Our classes are taught by experienced, professionals who create and deliver dynamic hands on lessons that are practical and designed to meet the needs of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND learners). By working with small groups we are able to provide the appropriate level of support and wraparound care so our learners can thrive.

We use digital learner resources and tablet computers. This enables learners who might struggle with English and Maths to achieve excellent results.

We work to remove the barriers from learning. We focus on engagement, improving self-esteem and confidence, but most importantly we make learning fun.

We are always in constant conversation with our clients and referrers; we are here to support your work with your learners.

Curriculum

We now offer Pearson Edexcel level one BTECs.
There are two pathways to choose from:
• BTEC level one diploma in Engineering
• BTEC level one diploma in Vocational Studies

The level one BTECs are perfect for alternative education and students who would like to progress to a level two BTEC or an apprenticeship. The curriculum focuses on skills rather than knowledge, with emphasis on practical work based learning.

BTEC level one diploma in Engineering includes the following units: welding, servicing of a motor vehicle, manufacturing products, electrical assembly, electrical instillation and routine service of machinery. All units are internally assessed.

BTEC level one diploma in Vocational Studies allows us to pick and chose units from different sectors to create bespoke learning programmes based on a learner's interest. Sectors covered include: Sport, Construction, Digital Media and Engineering.

Enrichment activities

As part of our alternative education package we organise regular off-road motorcycling days, college and work placement visits and trade shows. The off-road biking is our most popular activity and we utilise these trips as a tool to reward hard work and academic achievement.

All of our tutors are Auto Cycle Union approved coaches and follow the strict standards set out by The Auto Cycle Union.
