Preventing type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a serious health condition where the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood is too high. This can happen when your body doesn’t make enough insulin (a hormone), or the insulin it makes does not work properly.

High blood sugar levels over time can cause other health problems like heart attacks and strokes, as well as problems with your eyes, kidneys, and feet. These are called diabetes complications.

Around 6.9 million people are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in England, often without knowing it. You can also know your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by using Diabetes UK’s free, quick and online tool.

The good news is that type 2 diabetes can often be prevented through healthy behaviour changes. If you are identified as being at higher risk, the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) can provide free tailored support, guidance and motivation to help you build healthier habits and lower your risk of developing the condition.

In Camden, the programme is delivered by Living Well Taking Control (LWTC). Find out more about the programme, including eligibility and how to join, on the LWTC website.
