Led by women, for women - Laamiga

Laamiga is a Camden and Islington-based organisation delivering services across London, as well as online. It works with around 50 women each year who face compounded disadvantages due to the intersection of racism, sexism, and often challenging experiences.

Laamiga aims to empower women from minority ethnic, migrant and refugee backgrounds with the skills and confidence to realise their potential. It does this through woman-to-woman mentoring and tailored training programmes.

The organisation recruits and trains volunteer female mentors to support mentees in making progress on their personal and professional goals through regular meetings and action plans. Its projects promote equitable access to education and training for Laamiga mentees and have upskilled women across Camden and other boroughs, creating a supportive environment for women to connect. Each programme is tailored to the needs of the group.

Women within the network raise each other up and form strong connections by sharing experiences, knowledge, and offering mutual support. While receiving mentorship, mentees also share their own expertise, including finance or entrepreneurship, with each other. This collective strength empowers them to overcome challenges.

The organisation has opened doors for many women to reach their full potential. For example, helping Hannah set up her own business and Alys to develop her computing and English skills. Laamiga has supported bilingual counsellors, including Samina, to gain accreditation with professional bodies, helped young graduates like Halima to successfully gain employment, and supported single mothers, such as Mary, to balance her university studies with childcare.
