Stray and missing dogs

Report a stray dog

Before you start

If you find a stray dog and can’t contact the owner, you must report it to us.

If you report dogs on school premises or interfering with the flow of traffic, we will deal with this immediately.

For other stray dog sightings, we only respond if the dog has been captured or restrained.

What happens next

If we catch the dog, we will try to return if to the owner.

If we can’t contact the owner, we will take it to Battersea Dogs Home.

Keeping a stray dog

If you would like to keep a stray dog you have found:

Contact the stray dog team

We will need:

  • your name, address, phone number and email
  • a description of the dog – e.g. the breed, colour and size

Whats happens next

We will check if you're a suitable dog owner. If your request to keep the dog is approved, you will have to keep the dog for at least a month – it is a criminal offence if you don’t.

Missing dogs

Dogs must wear a tag when in a public place. This helps missing dogs to be returned.

If we catch your dog, we will return it to you for free. We can only do this if it is wearing a tag or microchipped.

If we cannot contact the owner, we will take it to Battersea Dogs Home who will keep the dog at your expense.

If you do not collect your dog within 7 days, you may lose the right to reclaim it and efforts will be made to re-home it.
