A true legend - Elaine McKenzie

Elaine is a British born cis gender lesbian who creates events for LGBT+ women to meet up, connect, share experiences, offer support, build communities, make friends and life partners.

Elaine built an incredible women's space at the legendary Glass Bar, and she continues to inspire with her events and projects which centre and celebrate women.

She is a true legend of the London Lesbian community. At forum+ we are so proud to have this incredible woman as Trustee of our charity. Elaine’s visibility and the great pride that she takes in her identity inspires everyone at forum+

forum+ is an independent charity working to promote equality for LGBT+ people in Camden and Islington, by hosting social groups and events which celebrate LGBT+ life in both boroughs and working to reduce social isolation and loneliness. They provide support services to victims of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime.

Elaine encourages us all to make time to celebrate our worth and be proud to be a woman and part of the LGBT+ community. Her achievements in LGBT+ business and events for women are a great example to us here at forum+

She operated The Glass Bar in Camden from 1995 – 2008. The venue held specific events for women of colour, and she is one of very few women of colour to have leased and operated an LGBTQ+ venue in London. She is a true pioneer and her continued success inspires women to follow their dreams and to create their own women centred spaces.

She has been a Trustee at forum+ since 2018 and we are extremely proud and privileged that Elaine is part of our team. We have learned so much from Elaine and her rich experience in creating special spaces to celebrate women. She is very much a mentor and so kind, approachable and always willing to share her expertise.

Elaine has inspired so many women in the local community and across London to reach out and organise events, networks and spaces. Fifteen years after its closure The Glass Bar in Camden is still spoken about, and the legacy of the venue is alive as she continues to create women centred events in venues all across London.

Elaine McKenzie is a role model to a great many people who aspire to her style, success and amazing achievements for women and the LGBT+ community. So many women have been inspired by Elaine McKenzie and we hope that her great example will continue to be followed.

Elaine McKenzie said: “Fill your life with good friends. Fill your life with people who want to be a positive part of your growth. Fill your life with people who get you. These are the people who will love you unconditionally and be there when you need support, encouragement, guidance and a shoulder to cry on. Make time to celebrate your worth.”
