West End project

How the plans benefit you

Pedestrians

In this busy area the pavements are congested, streets can be difficult to cross, and there is currently a lack of public space

What are the plans?

  • New park on Alfred Place
  • New plaza next to Centre Point and the Crossrail station
  • New public space at Princes Circus - the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and High Holborn
  • Safe and convenient pedestrian crossing at Princes Circus
  • Improved public spaces on Tottenham Court Road
  • Wider pavements on Tottenham Court Road and St Giles High Street
  • A new diagonal pedestrian crossing at St Giles Circus - the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street
  • Improved crossings on Tottenham Court Road, Gower Street and New Oxford Street
  • Raise the road to the same level as the pavement, in certain areas, to slow traffic and make it easier to cross the road

Cyclists

Cycling through the area is currently difficult with one-way streets and fast-moving traffic. The one-way system on Tottenham Court Road and Gower Street also increases journey times and is hard to navigate.

What are the plans?

  • Protected cycle lanes on Gower Street / Bloomsbury Street and Shaftesbury Avenue
  • Make Tottenham Court Road two-way for buses and cyclists only (from 8am-7pm, Monday to Saturday)
  • Traffic lanes on Tottenham Court Road would be wide enough to make it safer and easier for buses and cyclists to overtake
  • Less traffic within the area
  • Raise the road to the same level as the pavement, in certain areas, to improve public area
  • Safer junctions including removing conflicts between cycling and vehicles on Tottenham Court Road at the junction with Euston Road
  • New cycle parking
The protected cycle lanes will separate cyclists from traffic using 'stepped track', similar to those used on Old Shoreham Road in Brighton.

Buses

A large number of buses travel through the area, however the buses are delayed in certain areas and some passengers find the routes confusing as they can't arrive and leave from the same street.

What are the plans?

  • Quicker and more reliable bus journeys for most bus routes
  • Make Tottenham Court Road two-way for buses and cyclists only (from 8am-7pm, Monday to Saturday)
  • Move all bus routes from Gower Street to Tottenham Court Road
  • Bus passengers will be able to arrive and leave from Tottenham Court Road
  • Move all bus routes from part of St Giles High Street to Earnshaw Street
  • Some bus stops and bus stands will move from Earnshaw Street and Great Russell Street
Taxis

What are the plans?

  • Taxi ranks will be located on Tottenham Court Road, High Holborn, Great Russell Street, Bedford Avenue, Bayley Street, Store Street, Goodge Street, Denmark Street and Grafton Way
  • Make Gower Street two-way for all vehicles
  • Make Tottenham Court Road two-way for buses and cyclists only (from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday)
  • Taxis will only be allowed on short sections of Tottenham Court Road (via side streets) from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday
  • There will be no access to Charing Cross Road northbound from Cambridge Circus except for buses and cyclists from 8am – 7pm, Monday to Saturday
  • There will be no access except for cyclists to Tottenham Court Road from Bedford Avenue, Bayley Street and Capper Street
  • Some side streets will become one-way to traffic
  • Some turning movements will be banned – please see our traffic section for more information
  • Less traffic in the area as a whole but some streets will see an increase in traffic
