Camden’s new pollution fighting freight scheme wins a London Transport Award

A pollution saving pilot to deliver stationery by cargo cycle instead of diesel vans has won Camden Council an accolade at this year's London Transport Awards.

The award – for contribution to sustainable transport - was for a new trial to distribute freight using low carbon vehicles.

The pilot was supported by the former Clear Zones Partnership – made up of Camden and Westminster Council and the City of London – with funding from Transport for London.

Clear Zones worked in partnership with freight forwarder Gnewt Cargo and stationary supplier Office Depot in 2009 to provide support and commissioned the University of Westminster to evaluate the impacts of the trial.

Carbon dioxide and air pollution from delivery vehicles were significantly reduced and fuel costs were down over the length of the pilot. This was achieved  by swapping multiple diesel van deliveries from an outer London warehouse for cargo-cycle and electric van deliveries from a small local consolidation centre.

Total mileage over the pilot was reduced by 64 per cent with significant fuel savings. Over the entire operation carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 62 per cent per parcel.

Cllr Sue Vincent, Camden Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This pilot demonstrates a very innovative approach with the potential to reduce emissions on a much wider scale. I would like to congratulate the team and I'm delighted their achievements have been recognised."

The service is now being run on a commercial basis and the partners are looking at opportunities to expand it.
