Camden is highly commended for work with apprentices

Camden Council has been highly commended for its work with apprentices at the London region of the 2011 National Apprenticeship Awards.

Camden apprenticeships work with employers to help them introduce apprentices into their business, and helps those looking to start their careers to find an apprenticeship.

The highly commended award was given to Camden in the Macro Employer of the Year category, for organisations of more than 5,000 staff. Other entries shortlisted for the award included large private sector employers such as British Telecom.

The award recognises Camden’s work in improving employment opportunities for young people, by placing 68 apprentices in 40 Camden businesses, including Caterlink, Hob Salon, Crossroads Care and Highpoint Media.  Camden also has apprentices working for the Council.

In addition, King’s Cross Construction Skills Centre places over 100 apprentices every year with construction companies and projects around Camden.

Reiss Jerome Fraser (20) is an apprentice working at Camden transport services depot.  He works Monday to Thursday at the depot and goes to college to study for his apprenticeship qualification in mechanics on Fridays.

Reiss said:

“I’ve learnt loads of new skills over the past six months.  Everything was new to me, so it’s amazing to think I’m now inspecting vehicles, helping out with services and even assisting with MOTs.

“You’re guaranteed a decent wage while you’re training, but the training itself is priceless.  I finish my qualification next year.  Then I’ll be a fully trained mechanic, and hopefully be able to move on to even bigger and better things.’

Councillor Sarah Hayward, Cabinet member for community, regeneration and equalities, said:

“I’m delighted that Camden’s achievements have been recognised with this award.  Apprenticeships are such a vital way to open doors for young people into the world of work in today’s tough employment climate.”
