Universal Credit: Getting ready

Universal Credit (UC) is a new benefit for people of working age who are working and on a low income or are out of work. It is a benefit administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Universal Credit replaces the following benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit

Universal Credit does not replace Council Tax Reduction. Make a claim

When can you claim Universal Credit in Camden?

Universal Credit was introduced in Camden in 2016 for a limited group of single people. For other residents, when you can claim Universal Credit will depend on where you live and which Job Centre Plus you use.

Get ready for Universal Credit

As well as moving to a single payment, there will be other important changes to how residents receive their benefit. Universal Credit claimants will:

  • need to have a bank or building society account, or an account with an alternative provider like a credit union
  • need to apply for and manage their Universal Credit account online
  • be paid monthly, rather than weekly or fortnightly
  • be responsible for paying their own rent rather than it being paid directly to the landlord
