Camden's Procurement Strategy

Within our Procurement Strategy (2012-2015) we have a clear vision for how Camden buys goods and services:

“To be recognised as the leading Borough for Procurement in London and to fully support the delivery of efficient and cost effective services to meet the needs of Camden’s residents and businesses”

To bring this strategy to life we have proactively sought to evolve how we operate, and have already begun to implement ambitious projects such as “Camden First” – which will respond to the Camden Plan.

As part of our strategy, suppliers planning to work with us will see the following changes:

  • An emphasis on suppliers working with us to create jobs, apprenticeships and work experience opportunities for Camden residents
  • Equality and social value considerations embedded into our procurement activities
  • Increased partnership working to create opportunities for Camden businesses
  • Regular discussions with key suppliers on creating supply chain opportunities for Camden businesses
  • Workforce Standards- The Council recognises the importance and value of good employment practices in delivering public services and expects its suppliers to adopt these standards to help create a well-managed, engaged and motivated workforce including paying the living wage as appropriate.

We will also continue to work with suppliers to seek savings and efficiencies, to deliver savings whilst ensuring strategic objectives are delivered cost effectively.

Working with Camden Procurement

Camden procurement is a team of experienced professionals who work with our business units to achieve value for money for the Council when buying goods and services from suppliers.

We work with our business units and also a wide range of businesses to:

  • Find the right balance between the needs of our services and value for money, and effective management of commercial and operation risks
  • Create procurement approaches that can be used by everyone in the Council, and are fit for purpose for the goods and services we are buying
  • Remain flexible and responsive when considering ways of working to fit in with changing market priorities

The procurement team in Camden works with our business units to develop category strategies. This means we will set up contracts aligned with these strategies. We work with our business units to manage contracts.

We work with key strategic partners to ensure that we fully understand the way our suppliers work, and advise on how to sell to the Council.
