Make a representation

Commenting on a licensing application is known as 'making a representation'.

You may comment on:

  • an application for a new premises licence
  • a variation to an existing premises licence

You can support or oppose an application, but your comments must not be frivolous, repetitive or vexatious. They must address the effect the application could have on the licensing objectives:

  • Prevention of crime and disorder
  • Protection of children from harm
  • Public safety
  • Prevention of nuisance

We must grant a premises licence if we don’t receive any representations.

What happens next?

We will review your comment to ensure that it is relevant to the licensing objectives.

We will then send your comments to the applicant. We will remove your personal details, such as your address.

If the applicant does not address your concerns, we will refer the application to a licensing panel hearing. You will be invited to attend the hearing and present your concerns verbally to the licensing panel.
