Date: 14/09/07
What: Camden Council hosts Car Free Day 2007. A busy Holborn street will be closed to vehicles to make way for displays and activities with information on sustainable ways of travel.
Where: Gate Street, Holborn, WC2
When: Friday 21 September 2007, from 11am-3pm. Press launch at noon – Executive Member for Environment Cllr Mike Greene will officially launch the Holborn Commuter Guide.
Cars will make way for pedestrians when a busy Holborn street goes off limits to vehicles for Camden Council’s Car Free Day 2007 on Friday 21 September 2007.
Gate Street, a hotspot for central London commuters, will be a no-go zone for cars to make way for a range of exhibits and stalls promoting alternative means of travel.
The Council is holding the annual event to urge more people to consider making their journeys on foot, for example walking from a train station to work rather than getting the tube or catching a bus.
Car Free Day 2007 will feature the launch of the new Holborn Commuter Guide. This handy pocket sized leaflet provides commuters with all they need to know about travel in the area, including a walk to work map covering central London. Free stepometers, a device that counts the number of steps you make, will also be handed out to members of the public who attend the event.
Pupils from two local primary schools will also have their say on how they would like to travel to school and highlight any travel safety concerns they have. The young people will be asked to draw on posters to illustrate their thoughts on school travel.
The event will also feature:
- Launch of the Holborn Safer Travel at Night guide with information on night buses and other public transport, licensed mini-cab companies and tips on staying safe at night
- Displays demonstrating the health benefits of walking to work and tips on where to find the quieter paths in central London
- Local history walking tours led by the Holborn Rangers
- Information on the proposed Holborn Transport Management Association’s proposals including the proposed cycle stations
- Cycle security and safety tips
- Strolling jazz band.
Cllr Mike Greene, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said:
“All too often in our busy lives we overlook the option of walking without realising that it can often be quicker and much more enjoyable. We hope that by hosting an event like Car Free Day we get people thinking about the ways they travel and help them discover more about the benefits of cycling and walking. There are many excellent initiatives that promote sustainable travel. This gives people a great opportunity to find out more about them.”
Notes to Editors:
Car Free Day marks the end of European Mobility Week, which runs from 16 to 22 September.
Gate Street in Holborn will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7am-7pm on Friday 21 September to allow for event preparation and clean up.
14 other London boroughs are taking part in Car Free Day 2007.
