Welcome the world - Camden 2012 volunteering
We need volunteers to welcome the thousands of visitors to Camden next summer.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people, develop skills and give something back to the community. What better time to give it a go than for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games?
What will the volunteering role involve?
- helping out at Camden events, including the torch relay
- giving advice and directions and assisting with crowd management
- sharing important emergency information when required
- handing out information on local attractions and events
- team leaders are asked to support team members in their volunteering role and offer a more supervisory role
- being prepared to volunteer whatever the weather
- being comfortable with fairly long periods of standing or walking.

- all volunteers will be eligible for a reference
- all volunteers will be able to claim volunteer expenses up to £5 a day whilst volunteering
Who can apply?
Camden residents or people that work or study in the borough can apply:
- team leaders need to be aged 18+ years old by 4 June 2012
- team members need to be aged 16+ years old by 4 June 2012
- volunteers are asked to commit to ideally five hours a day for five consecutive days during the time of the Games, 27 July - 12 August 2012 and 29 August - 9 September 2012, or be able to commit to helping out at a few of the Camden 2012 events during 26 July - 9 September.
Skills and qualities needed
- good interpersonal skills - both communicating and listening
- positive, can-do spirit
- ability to remain calm in challenging situations
- ability to work effectively as part of a team
- ability to quickly create relationships with people who are different from you and who may not speak English
- proud to represent Camden Council.
Dates for your diary
Applications are now open. Please note the following important dates:
- February - May 2012 - interviews
- April - May 2012 - first half day of training
- May - June 2012 - second half day of training
- May - June 2012 - first aid training for team leaders
- June - July - three hour workshop for team leaders
- July - three hour event to pick up uniform and badge and reminder on training
- July - September 2012 - volunteering takes place
- September 2012 - social and thank you celebration.
How?
If you would like to be a volunteer, please:
- complete an application form, which you can download below, telling us about yourself and why you would make a great volunteer
- attend an informal interview / welcome meeting
- attend two half-days training (team leaders are also asked to complete a half-day first aid training)
- confirm your commitment at your informal interview.
