Architects shortlisted for Maiden Lane make-over
Date: 24/3/10
Camden Council has shortlisted architects who will now compete to convince residents that they should deliver estate regeneration work planned for the Maiden Lane estate. The news comes after the Council’s Executive agreed in December to invest £500,000 to kick-start the regeneration of the estate. The plans build on earlier investment in the estate, which has included a new football pitch and new CCTV.The shortlisted architects’ ideas will be on display at the Maiden Lane community centre from 20 March for residents to look at and comment on. A panel of residents and councillors will then choose which architect they want to work with to develop plans for the estate over the coming months.
Regeneration work will include plans for building new housing that will provide homes for Camden residents, and particularly the residents of the estate. New homes will also be built to funding to invest in refurbishment work on the estate.
The architects are presenting initial ideas to help the Council and residents choose who they think would work with them to develop the best plans for the estate. At this stage specific plans for the estate have not been developed.
Councillor Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy, Camden Council, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the community at Maiden Lane. There is a pressing need for investment in new and environmentally sustainable homes, particularly for larger families.
"Through regeneration we can make sure that we deliver those new homes to a high standard. The real challenge for the architects will be to meet the very high standards that we know residents will expect and demand. This is an important step forward for Maiden Lane.”
