Camden’s EcoHome Wins Sustain Magazine Award

Date:   05/03/2009

Camden Council’s carbon saving EcoHome was this week announced winner of a prestigious sustainability award.

The EcoHome won the ‘Refurbishment Award’ in the category for Property & the Built Environment. The awards celebrate the creativity, commitment and achievement in the field of sustainability.

Cllr Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy, said:

“Camden Council is delighted and proud that the EcoHome has won this award.  The EcoHome is a pioneering project and is amongst only a handful of houses in the country that has been refurbished to achieve such high reductions in emissions – possibly the highest.

“Sustainability is a high priority for Camden Council, and we want Camden’s housing to lead the way on fighting climate change by cutting emissions and reducing fuel poverty. We know direct from residents that they think this is important.

“Camden’s character comes from its tens of thousands of period buildings – very attractive but highly inefficient in energy terms. The EcoHome shows how to make them efficient without losing their attractiveness.”

The EcoHome is a ground breaking experiment led by Camden Council, University College London, Sustainable Energy Academy as well as industry partners like Kingspan Insulation to reduce carbon emissions whilst addressing heritage issues.

The Victorian home, built in 1850, has undergone improvements that could cut carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent.

Improvements include greatly increased roof insulation and air tightness, floor and wall insulation, solar UV panels, solar hot-water heat recovery ventilation, rainwater harvesting and double glazed windows.

Camden has over 9,500 solid wall properties, many of which are similar to the EcoHome.

The EcoHome is an example of good practice in reducing carbon emissions and shows how technology can transform our homes.

The Sustainable Awards recognise projects and organisations at the forefront of housing sustainability best practice.

The awards were presented at a special gala dinner held on the first night of Ecobuild, in London, on Tuesday 3 March 2009.  The event showcased those companies, organisations, projects, products, systems and schemes judged by experts and a panel to have demonstrated excellence in their chosen category.
