Camden students encouraged to Aimhigher

Date:   26/02/2009

Year 12 students from across Camden have been shown that university is within their reach at a special Camden Higher Education Day.

Some 35 of the country’s top universities were represented at the Wednesday February 11 event which was attended by sixth-form students from schools and college including Haverstock, Camden School for Girls, Hampstead, South Camden Community School and Maria Fidelis and Westminster-Kingsway College.  There were specialist workshops for students interested in medicine, Oxbridge and in the performing arts.

The day was organised by Camden Aimhigher, part of a national initiative to encourage young people, whose families do not have a history of higher education, to apply to university. The idea of the event is to show young people from all backgrounds that university is within their reach.

Cllr Andrew Mennear, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Schools, said:

“This is a great event and I support anything that helps our young people aim higher. Progression through school exams and onto higher education can transform a young life and open so many doors of opportunity. I am very pleased that so many of your young people are looking ahead and realising the importance of a good education and how this can ensure they have firm job prospects, even when times are hard. I wish every one of them the best of luck for the future.”

Vivien Barr, Camden Council’s Aimhigher Co-ordinator, organised the day. She said:

“We run this event every year but I have to say this was the biggest and best ever. We had information and representatives from the very best universities in the country and plenty of people on hand to explain just what it takes to get into university – and what it’s like when you get there.”

She added:

“I was pleased to see so many young people enquiring about the university courses on offer and university staff were impressed with the quality of the questions from our Camden sixth formers. When your family does not have a history of higher education the prospect can often seem daunting but I think this event went a long way to showing young people that university is within their grasp. I am delighted that the event was such a success.”
