Primary school places update

Applications for reception class Sept 2011

This year, the admissions for primary school places are being coordinated on a Pan-London basis. Applications for places in Sept 2011 closed in January 2011.

We are likely to know what the position for 2011 will be at the beginning of April. Information will be available on these pages.

Information on the numbers of unplaced children 2010

1,678 applications for primary school places were received by the deadline of 29 Jan 2010. Camden currently has 1,598 places in reception classes.

A chart showing how many people received an offer of their preferred school is available below:

Unfortunately, 76 families were left without the offer of a school place in the first round of the admissions process. This map shows the distribution of families without an offer of a school place at 5 May (first round of admissions) and again at 21 May. Applications received after the Jan 29 deadline have been included as unplaced on 21 May.

What happens to children without a school place?

Children without a school place go on to the list for any school their parent or carer has expressed an interest in. Offers are made solely in accordance with each school's admissions criteria - not on the length of time that someone has waited, and no account is taken of whether they have an existing offer of a school place or not.

How do primary school places become available?

A proportion of the offers made are turned down, and the places coming available are then re-offered. Some families accept offers but then their circumstances change and they give up the offer. From previous years we know that around 300 school places will be re-offered between May and the start of term in September.

What happened last year?

Information on the numbers of unplaced children 2009.

During 2009 a shortage of primary school places for reception-age children meant that some families had to wait several months before an offer of a place could be made.

In July 2009, Camden decided to set up the Courthope Education Centre (see below) so that children without a mainstream school place could be offered a place in a reception class.

Primrose Hill primary school has agreed to add an extra Year One classroom in September 2010 so that all the children from Courthope will have the offer of a permanent school place. See our news item here

Working group

A working group has been set up which meets to look at both short term and longer term provision of primary school places.

This has centred mostly on wards with the most number of children without school places: Belsize, Swiss Cottage, Fitzjohns, West Hampstead and Kilburn.

Camden Courthope Education Centre

The Courthope Education Centre is now closed. The children who attended this temporary reception class were offered places in an additional Year 1 class created at Primrose Hill school in September 2010.
