The ways that you can get married
There are many different ways you can get married. Usually, you and your partner will have to go to the register office for the area each of you live in and “give notice”, which means, tell us that you want to get married.
You will have to give us certain information. The marriage can then take place 16 days after you have given notice. You will have to pay fee for giving the notice as well as for the wedding itself. The amount you have to pay will depend on the venue for the wedding you choose.
There are several ways you can get married. It can sometimes be complicated as some of the things you have to do depend on the area where you and your partner live and where you wish to get married.
You can choose:
- to get married at a register office
- to get married in a Church of England Church
- to get married at an approved venue
- to get married at a religious building that is not Church of England
- to get married outside England and Wales.

Get married in a Church
Church of England Church
If you are getting married in a Church of England Church then you usually do not have to come and see us to give a notice of marriage. This is because the vicar will read out “banns” in church, which count as the notice being given.
Your vicar will be able to tell you about what you need to do to complete your marriage preliminaries.
All other Religious ceremonies
The law only recognises the above process for Church of England ceremonies. If you are getting married by another religious ceremony you will both need to give a notice of marriage. If neither of you live in the registration district of the church, at least one of you must be qualified* to marry there (except Jewish ceremonies). Please contact the registrars for further information.
*It must be the usual place of worship for at least one of you.

Have your ceremony at Camden Town Hall
If you want to get married at Camden's Town Hall's ceremony suite, committee room or council chambers, you can choose which room will suit your needs and to make the day special for you and your partner.
The ceremony suite, committee room and council chambers are located at Camden's historic town hall in the heart of central London, ideal for a romantic honeymoon in Paris by Eurostar from St Pancras International.
| Room capacity | |
|---|---|
| Ceremony suite | up to 30 guests |
| Committee room | from 20 to 50 guests |
| Council chambers | up to 180 guests |
The grand marble staircase will also make the perfect spot for your wedding photos.
Contact the Camden register office for more information.

Have your ceremony at a venue in Camden
We have given a licence to more than 30 venues to hold civil ceremonies. This means that a Camden superintendent registrar will perform the ceremony in one of these locations.
You can choose to have your ceremony in the ceremony suite, committee rooms or the council chambers at Camden Town Hall or you can choose one of the venues approved for civil marriage/civil partnerships listed below.
In both cases the ceremony will be conducted by our register office staff who will be delighted to discuss your particular wishes for your special day.

Information you need to provide
Please note that documents proving nationality, identification and evidence of an end of any previous marriage/civil partnership MUST be produced at the time of the notice appointment as the process cannot be completed without them.
When you go to the register office, you and your partner will have to provide information. The superintendent register will ask you a number of questions in private and record the details into a registration computer file.
You will be asked for the following information and to give evidence of:
- full names
- ages
- nationality
You will need to provide a passport. If you do not have a passport, other photo ID together with a document proving your nationality will be acceptable.
Addresses
You will both need to provide proof of address, such as a domestic bill or bank statement containing the address you are both living at, even if you live together.
Occupations
You will both need to tell us what you do for a living.
Marital status
- If you have been married before you must bring proof that the marriage has ended.
- If your former spouse died you must bring the death certificate.
- If you are divorced or your marriage or civil partnership was dissolved you must bring a court stamped copy of the Decree Absolute.
- If the divorce was in another country you must provide the document issued by that country and a translation, if it is not in English.
Consent if under 18 years old
If you are under 18 years old you must provide a full birth certificate and get the consent from your parents or guardian. The superintendent will give you a consent form.
If you do not have a European Economic Area (EEA) Swiss or UK Passport
If you would like information on obtaining the relevant documents or to check whether you already have the correct documents please contact the Home Office Border and Immigration Agency
Once you have the relevant documents you can book an appointment for the two of you to go together to give your formal notice or marriage. One of the above documents must be produced for you (and your partner if they are also subject to immigration control) together with the documents stated below.
If you are subject to immigration control you must also meet one of the following three criteria before you can give a notice of marriage:
- you have an entry clearance granted expressly for the purpose of marriage in the United Kingdom (UK); or
- you have a Certificate of Approval (written permission of the Secretary of State to marry in the UK); or
- you fall within a class of persons specified by the Secretary of State (this will be someone with settled status in the UK for example Indefinite Leave to Remain)
