Archaeological sites and ancient monuments

We will seek to protect, enhance and preserve sites of archaeological interest and their settings. Sites which have been designated as ancient monuments have a legal protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and are inspected on a regular basis by English Heritage.

We currently have one designated monument within the borough, Boadicea’s mound on Hampstead Heath which is managed by the Corporation of London.

The history of Camden indicates that there is likely that archaeological remains will be found in other parts of the borough.

We consult with and are guided by English Heritage (Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service) on the archaeological implications of development proposals, especially within priority areas identified on the maps within the Unitary Development Plan (UDP).

English Heritage has a greater London sites and monuments record which holds information on almost 72,000 historical and archaeological sites and listed buildings from across London's 33 boroughs.
