Walking in Camden
Pedestrians
Millions of visitors stroll around the borough each year at their leisure. We recognise that these are a small fraction of those walking as part of their day-to-day activities. It is estimated that Camden residents make 225,000 walking trips each day and many more people come into the borough to work and walk around Camden during their day.
Camden Walking Plan
Camden’s Green Transport Strategy places a strong focus on encouraging walking as a way of getting around. Central to the strategy has been the Camden Walking Plan, which sets out a series of practical actions being taken by the Council including:
- significantly improved pavement surfaces and removing clutter
- regular street cleaning
- better footway facilities for the disabled
- new green man and zebra crossings
- street lighting renewal and improvement programme
- seating and pedestrian signage
- Town Centre and other area-wide improvements focusing on walking
- Camden Street Warden Service
- Camden and Islington Health Walks
- measures to improve air quality
- School Travel Plans
- Workplace Travel Plans
- Community Transport Initiatives
We also have a number of road safety projects aimed at making streets safer for pedestrians (particularly vulnerable users) and encouraging walking including:
- 20mph zones and local safety schemes
- safer routes to schools projects
- school crossing patrols
- pedestrian skills training
- road safety drama for older people
The Second Edition of the Camden Walking Plan was published in 2006.
In early 2008 a full review of our progress during 2006 and 2007 on targets identified in the Second Edition of the Camden Walking Plan was conducted.
