Kentish Town Sports Centre

Kentish Town refurbishment goes ahead

Swimming Goggles

Work has now begun on the Kentish Town Sports Centre site (see location map). After we received approval from the Government Office for London and got consent from English Heritage it was time for the work to really begin.

Wates, our construction partner are now on site and have begun preparatory work including

  • Putting up hoardings around the site
  • Erecting scaffolding in preparation to demolish the old boiler room house
  • Putting up external scaffolding so we can start cleaning the outside of the building.

As work progresses we will be keeping you up-to-date on these web pages and through the newsletter. We will also be working closely with Wates to make sure that residents near the site are aware of any plans affecting them.

Any questions?

If you have any questions about construction issues, you can speak to Wates direct on 07513 976715. This hotline is available from 7:30am - 5:30pm Monday to Saturday.

Detail of building work

The need for careful work during the refurbishment was recently brought to light in the early preparatory work undertaken to make the building safe for refurbishment. After some of the false ceilings and protective walls had been removed, some interesting heritage features were uncovered which no one had seen for more than 40 years.

These include plaster work under the large bay windows overlooking the Willes pool and decorative arches and supports in the Grafton pool.

KTSC user group

The KTSC user group is made up of former users of the centre and local residents. The user group has been instrumental in getting the project this far and will continue to help shape the direction of the refurbishment.

We are very grateful for their involvement and feedback, as it is essential that the centre retain its place as a vital centre of the local community, meeting its varied needs.

Brenda Sullivan

Brenda Sullivan, who is also Chair of the London Schools' Swimming Association and an active member of the user group, recently stated: “I am delighted and honoured to be a member of the user group and know that Kentish Town Sports Centre will be something to be very proud of once the refurbishment is completed. It is absolutely brilliant that Camden Council is including local residents and committed users in the plans for the future of the baths.”
