Green Flag awards

Waterlow Park

Seven of our parks have received Green Flag Awards awards which means these parks meet the high standards expected from parks across the country. This year's Green Flag sites are Bloomsbury Square, Brunswick Square, Russell Square, St Georges Gardens, St Martin's Gardens, Talacre Gardens and Waterlow Park

In September 2009, Waterlow Park was given a Gold award by London in Bloom - a truly prestigious award.

A long and rich history

Camden’s open spaces and public parks have a long and rich history. Famous landscape architects, such as Humphrey Repton, designed some of our gardens, Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square being prime examples.

Some sites have evolved from old private gardens like the jewel in our crown - Waterlow Park - while others were constructed by early property developers for communal use by new owners - Leighton Crescent Gardens still very much used by local residents.

For the historically minded, we have old burial grounds steeped in mystery and packed with secret stories waiting to be discovered. St Pancras Gardens and Hampstead Cemetery are but two of the gems.

Sports and activities

In Camden there are over 70 green spaces. Our parks and open spaces offer a wide range of sports, activities, outdoor gyms and events, neighbourhood playgrounds and allotments, as well as great parks with quiet areas where you can relax and escape from busy inner-city life.

We are also home to world-famous parks like the Regent's Park, managed by The Royal Parks; Hampstead Heath, managed by the Corporation of London; Highgate Cemetery, lovingly cared for by the Friends Group and the Regent's Canal looked after by British Waterways.

Nature reserves

As part of our commitment to London’s biodiversity, we run three nature reserves - secret hideouts for the city’s flora and fauna - which are open to the public for a limited duration during the week. Find out more about Camden's nature reserves
