Legacy projects

We've developed 12 legacy projects to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are used as a catalyst to improve the lives of people living and working in the borough.

What are the projects?

Camden events

Visit Love Camden to see all upcoming activities and events in the borough, and check out Camden Voices Flickr page to see some of the best shots of what’s been happening around Camden.

The 2012 Camden Cultural Olympiad programme will feature the very best Camden has to offer – giving visitors and locals the opportunity to stretch their imaginations, expand their future aspirations and grasp new opportunities. The aim is to create a year, offering moments of awe, which will be remembered in the future with fondness. All the event details will be listed in Love Camden

Camden volunteers

Camden volunteers will increase volunteering by 1500 from businesses and residents in Camden to equal and beyond levels in other London boroughs.

The project will support local people and businesses to access volunteering opportunities in the cultural sector; including the arts, events, sports and environmental volunteering.

Improved brokerage will better match people to opportunities, plus more support will be given to organisations to assist them to develop their volunteering activities and offer more support to the volunteers they work with.

Camden business benefits

This project enables local businesses to get all the benefits possible from the London 2012 Games, especially important in the current climate. The focus of the work is upon small and medium sized enterprises, targeting mainly the hospitality, construction, creative and cultural and tourism sectors.

Projects have included the following:

  • Promoting local procurement opportunities by supporting local suppliers through signposting to appropriate workshops to become fit to tender.
  • Working with partners to organise Meet the Buyer Event to provide local suppliers with opportunities to meet Buyers who are in active procurement mode.
  • Although the ICAM2 project ended in March 2011, the Economic Development team is continuing to inform businesses about the range of Olympic tender opportunities available via a regular news bulletin. If you would like to be added to the mailing list, please contact the economic development team

We are continuing to work with local and regional agencies in order to maximise opportunities generated by the Olympics for Camden businesses.

Camden employment benefits

This project works to maximise benefits generated by the 2012 Games for Camden residents to gain skills and access employment opportunities.

Projects have included the following:

  • Camden Working, our local job brokerage, which worked to support local people in accessing Games related jobs though the Relay Jobs website and local opportunities in growing industries such as construction and hospitality. The project ended in March 2011
  • Camden took part in the Personal Best initiative, aimed at linking unemployed people, or those with few qualifications, to volunteering opportunities during the 2012 Olympic Games. The project engaged with 332 long term unemployed and socially excluded people, supported 43 into volunteering opportunities and 24 into paid employment. 62 participants applied for 2012 Games Maker roles, and had guaranteed interviews.

Camden Apprenticeships has continued to successfully support local young people into apprenticeships in a wide range of sectors since its establishment in March 2010. A total of 14 apprentices started work with Camden employers between June and September 2011 in health and social care, child care, marketing, administration, hairdressing, hospitality multi-skilling and customer service. October 2011 sees the start of a two week pre-apprenticeship in partnership with CITE to support 16-24 year olds into care work apprenticeships, whilst a second pre-apprenticeship will run in November in conjunction with 15 billion to enable underrepresented groups to access childcare apprenticeships.

Visit Camden

Each day 10.2 million visitors come to Camden, the total visitor spend is £1.2 billion and the industry provides 16,500 jobs. The Visit Camden legacy project will strengthen Camden's visitor economy in the lead up to and beyond the Games to ensure we sustain our tourist economy and benefit from increased tourism in 2012.

Camden is well placed to benefit with King's Cross St Pancras providing one of the main transport links to the site in Stratford and as a centrally located London borough we have a huge tourist offer.

In 2012 we are promoting Camden's visitor offer by working with local hotel concierges, creating bespoke material for them, including a map highlighting all the cultural attractions and shopping/food districts within easy walking distance, organising Media tours for national and international journalists as well as working with the London Media Centre.

London Borough of Camden is also part of the London Greeters project which offers walking tours for visitors to the borough with local volunteers.

Green travel benefits

We are implementing the Legible London project, which is a new pedestrian way-finding system to help people walk around the Capital. In Camden the project is currently providing signage in and links between:  Covent Garden, Bloomsbury, Tottenham Court Road, King’s Cross, Somers Town and Camden Town. Plans are underway to extend the scheme into the King’s Cross Central development, Kentish Town and Swiss Cottage.

This project will enable tourists to find their way around better and so access new areas of Camden that they would miss if they were not travelling by foot. It also promotes walking, which is a healthier and greener travel alternative.

Camden is working in partnership with TfL to expand Barclays Cycle Hire in the borough with more sites in zone 1 and an extension to Camden Town. New docking stations will be ready for the Olympics and provide a great way for Londoners and visitors to explore the Capital during the 2012 Games.

Public space benefits

Camden has used the London 2012 Games as a catalyst to drive forward a number of improvements to public spaces. This includes the completion of the Bloomsbury Streets for People scheme before the media transport hub is set up in Russell Square.

There have also been improvements to the Marchmont Street / Tavistock Place junction and to Brill Place, both of which will be key walking routes during 2012.

Camden learning opportunities

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are an opportunity to excite and inspire young people. We want to make sure we take every chance to link learning to the Games to capture this enthusiasm, through activities based on the seven Olympic and Paralympic values of friendship, respect, equality, excellence, courage, inspiration and determination.

Since January 2012, the Camden learning opportunities legacy project has provided a range of support for local schools, which to date has included:

  • a series of drama workshops across 12 Camden schools, focused on issues such as bullying and hate crime to promote the values of respect, friendship and equality
  • an inspirational people scheme, taking place across eight schools in the borough
  • an interactive school council conference based around the seven values
  • an enterprise project focused on environmental issues which explored all seven values
  • a 'race for ideas', in which school students visited seven museums in Camden, identifying artefacts that best represented each of the values
  • a writing images project, encouraging creative writing.

Youth service activities have provided Camden's young people with additional opportunities to get involved in the project outside of school. Activities include:

  • a virtual exchange project with young people in Gravesham
  • a cycle rally around the borough with rest stops representing each of the seven values
  • activities based around horses riding as part of the summer university offer
  • three intergenerational projects in each of the three youth service areas.
