How should businesses plan?
Identify how disruption could affect your staff, customers, visitors and suppliers and develop an action plan which will allow you to operate affectively during this time. You will need to consider what resources you will need to deal with any additional demand.

Olympic deliveries
We recognise that deliveries and collections during this period will be challenging for businesses with the increase in traffic congestion expected across the capital and changes in access to some roads. While night time deliveries are not banned in Camden, we do not encourage deliveries between 8pm and 8am.
To support local businesses, we are taking a more relaxed approach to night time deliveries, but it is important that we find a balance between helping businesses operate, while ensuring that disruption to residents is kept to a minimum.
Please note the following information and to ensure you make alternative arrangements where needed.
Business along the ORN
If your business is located along the Olympic Route Network (ORN), you will need to arrange for deliveries and collections to be made between midnight and 6am from Thursday 27 July to Sunday 12 August.
If your business is not along the ORN
For businesses located elsewhere in Camden, we will be more relaxed about the times you choose to make and receive deliveries. Where possible we encourage that deliveries are made after 8am and before 8pm, but appreciate that this might not be possible in some circumstances.
There are locations across the borough where loading is restricted at all times. These areas are indicated by signs and two yellow markings on the kerb, known as double blips.
Please note that for safety reasons we will still enforce at these locations throughout the Olympic period.
Options for altering deliveries
Businesses are advised to look into other ways of making and receiving deliveries this summer, including:
- stockpiling in advance
- working with suppliers to re-route away from areas of highest congestion
- looking at whether deliveries can be reduced or combined.
How you can help minimise disruption
To help minimise the disruption that night time deliveries may cause, we are encouraging all businesses and freight companies to follow the Transport for London (TfL) code of practice, which you can view here online.
Noise complaints
When we receive a noise complaint, we have a duty to investigate. If a nuisance exists, enforcement action will be considered. Following the TfL code of practice will help ensure that deliveries do not cause nuisance.
Licensing and planning conditions
Some businesses have specific licensing or planning conditions prohibiting deliveries outside of defined hours. If we become aware of breaches of conditions, we will investigate and enforcement action may be considered. If such conditions apply to your business, please contact us on 020 7974 4444 to discuss how we can work together to minimise disruption. However, be assured we will be mindful of the exceptional circumstances of the Games.
Travel advice for businesses
Transport for London (TfL) are expecting six weeks of severe travel disruptions across the transport network, which could affect your employees, customers, contractors, visitors and suppliers.
Get ahead of the Games
TfL have created a website, Get Ahead of the Games, to help everyone get around more easily this summer. This will be particularly helpful for staff in your business to plan their way to and from work, or for any travel they need to do as part of their job.
Which areas of Camden will be most effected?
The south of the borough will experience the most impact during 2012, around King’s Cross, Euston, Bloomsbury and Holborn.
- Likely disruptions in these areas are outlined on the London 2012 website, (refer to ‘Area 6: King’s Cross’).
How else will 2012 impact travel in Camden?
- increased congestion and possible delays to accessing the public transport network at hot spots: Euston, St Pancras, King’s Cross, Holborn and Tottenham Court Road
- increased congestion on parts of the public transport network serving Camden; in particular the Central and Jubilee lines, which are key routes to the Olympic Park. See the TfL website for details of impact on tube lines and at key stations.
- the Olympic (and Paralympic) Route Network (ORN) will enable athletes, officials and media to travel as efficiently as possible to various sites across the capital. This will require some road closures – around Russell Square – and will displace traffic onto other parts of the road network. See the Transport for London website for details of the ORN and day by day mapping of likely congestion during the Games.
Contract opportunities
The government’s free service, CompeteFor, enables businesses to receive notifications and compete for contract opportunities linked to 2012 and other major public sector buyers.
There are still 2012 related contract opportunities available for businesses:
Trading standards - restrictions on use of Olympic branding
The focus of the world media will be on London summer 2012 and the games will attract large numbers of additional visitors. This presents a fantastic marketing opportunity for businesses to increase trade and profile.
When considering any marketing you should be mindful of restrictions around the use of Olympic branding.
There are very strict regulations in place around why the London 2012 brand must be protected. For information on these, including legal implications of not following the guidelines, visit London 2012
There are also advertising and trading regulations in place, which bring in temporary restrictions to advertising and trading in open public places. Full details are available on the London 2012 website.
