Out of school care

Out of school services, sometimes called kid's clubs are run outside school hours offering play opportunities and childcare for school-age children in a supervised setting.

They may be provided by the council, voluntary organisations, employers or private companies and are usually based in or near schools.

Activities are planned to help children play, learn and relax with their friends (whilst making new ones) in a stimulating, yet comfortable and safe environment. Services will often pick children up from local schools, if not based in the school itself.

There are different types of out of school services, so look around to find one that suits you and your child.

What are the different types of out of school service?

  • breakfast clubs, open in the mornings before school, and incorporating breakfast
  • after school clubs, open in the afternoons after school
  • holiday playschemes, open during school holidays

How do I know my child will be safe and secure?

All out of school services for children aged under eight, which run for more than two hours per day and more than five days a year, must be registered with the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). Some out of school projects do not currently need to be registered, for example, those for children aged over eight only.

Registered services are inspected regularly to ensure they meet National Standards. At least half of the staff must hold relevant qualifications and there are rules on the ratio of staff to children, depending on the ages of the children catered for.

A check is also done on the premises to ensure they are safe and suitable. You know your child best. Visit projects to see if they are suitable for your child. Ask to see copies of Ofsted inspection reports and talk to other parents

How many children will there be?

Most out of school services provide places for between 10 and 40 children although some are smaller and others are larger.

What age range of children will be there?

Most children attending out of school services are of primary school age. Some services provide places for three and four years olds to ‘wrap’ around nursery or pre-school education. Other services provide places geared for older children aged 10 to 14.

When will services be open?

Out of school services can open before school and care for children after school until about 6pm. During school holidays, projects are likely to be open longer hours, between 8am and 6pm

What about part-time childcare?

Many out of school services will be happy to offer you part-time childcare. You may need to book regular sessions to make sure a place is available when you need it.

How much will it cost?

Prices can vary depending on the service that you are using. For information on costs and location of services, please contact the family information service
