ScootAbility

ScootAbility scheme loans Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV) i.e. scooters, power chairs and manual wheelchairs to residents of the London boroughs of Camden and Islington. Unlike most other scooter loan schemes, ScootAbility delivers the vehicles to and collects them from your home.

We have recently used our expertise to produce a Mobility Scooter and Electric Wheelchair Training DVD. The DVD is available for purchase to any individual or organisation. More information on the training DVD

Alternatively you may choose to purchase the DVD in person at the cashiers service desk

What is the loan period?

Vehicles are currently available for loan from one day to seven days at a time (this may be subject to change). Individuals can benefit from this delivery service if their home is accessible for a PMV and they have suitable charging and storage facilities.

How to join the scheme

An application form can be obtained on request from the passenger and accessible transport service. Alternatively you can download an application form or request a form online

If you have asked the Passenger and Accessible Transport Service to send you an application form, then please allow reasonable time for Royal Mail to deliver the documents.

Eligibility

The scheme is for permanent residents of the boroughs of Camden and Islington who are aged 16 years and over and who have a mobility impairment.

Applicants will need to provide proof of permanent residence in the London boroughs of Camden or Islington.

Cost to user

Membership is currently £10 per year (April-April). There is currently no daily charge for the loan of a PMV.

Training

Please note that before you can loan a PMV you will need to undergo training. All applicants need to able to use the vehicles safely before membership of ScootAbility is granted.

All applicants are given one-to-one training to ensure that they feel confident, safe and competent at using a PMV in and around their local area.

Training is carried out by trained professionals who will provide guidance and support at a steady speed and will always be happy to answer any questions you may have. The training session will provide the opportunity to use a vehicle and deal with any issues or concerns that you may have.

Once training has been successfully completed, you will be awarded membership. There are different levels of membership:

Membership LevelsMembership Description
SC1 Day loan onlyYour property has a secure storage area, but no suitable charging facilities
SC2 One to seven days loanYour property is accessible for PMV storage. Secure storage area and charging facilities were identified.

Members will be sent the terms and conditions of the ScootAbility service to read, sign and return to the Passenger and Accessible Transport Service before using the service.

Home assessment

The application process includes a home assessment which involves checking access to your home for the vehicle to ensure there is a suitable storage space and somewhere to recharge the vehicle. This is important because we need to ensure that the vehicle will not be stolen or vandalised.

Minor adaptations

In some cases the home assessment may identify that minor adaptations may be necessary to your home or to an external storage facility. The ScootAbilty project is able to carry out and pay towards minor adaptations to enable members to use the service. Dependent upon the cost of the adaptation you may be asked to contribute towards this.

However, the appropriate permissions must be sought from your landlord (if you are not the home owner) prior to the adaptations being carried out if this is applicable.

How to use the service

Depending on the level of membership awarded, a PMV can be loaned for a period of one to seven days. The vehicles need to be booked in advance and returned promptly at the agreed time.
