Caring and working

There are about 15,500 carers in Camden. Around 9,000 of them do some kind of paid work.

Many carers find they cannot work because of the amount of time they spend caring. Other carers try to ‘juggle’ work with caring and find themselves doing two jobs, one paid and one unpaid.

Problems faced by carers who are working include:

  • stress and anxiety from constantly juggling work and care
  • tiredness and having to cope with little or broken sleep
  • isolation because they have no time to go out and socialise
  • feeling that their colleagues think they are not committed to their paid work

The support a carer needs to keep working may be very simple. For example, a carer might need to be able to use a telephone and check that the person they care for is all right.

Sometimes, however, carers do need to take leave to help them through difficult times.
