Camden mental health user involvement service (CMHUIS)

Supporting the mental health user involvement service

Members of CMHUIS are people who use or have in the past used mental health services, or who are survivors of mental ill-health.

What do we offer?

  • We provide a monthly newsletter with news, information and interesting articles to keep people informed and up-to-date with what is going on.
  • We hold weekly drop-ins at Charlie Ratchford Resource Centre Belmont Street NW1 8HF. Drop-ins are on Tuesdays from 3.30pm to 5pm. They give members the opportunity to use computers, come and speak to an involvement worker or simply have a cup of coffee in friendly surroundings.
  • We hold regular monthly forums on the first Wednesday of each month with key speakers on various topics such as benefits and changes within the mental health system. Please check this web page for regular updates.
  • CMHUIS is committed to providing three social events a year.

Camden Borough User Group (CBUG)

We work with CBUG, a group of people who have used mental health services and want to be involved in projects. CBUG and CMHUIS encourage service users to get involved as little or as much they feel would suit each individual.

CBUG has now started a monthly patients' council at the in-patient wards at the Grove Unit (Royal Free Hospital) and the Huntley Centre (St Pancras).

CBUG plans further projects; including work with BME communities, and with homeless people experiencing mental ill-health.

CBUG members have gained confidence, learned new skills, refreshed old skills and had lots of training opportunities. We are now working with communities to broaden the membership of the involvement service, ensuring as many people as possible are taking part.

Progress so far

We are in the process of setting up a committee to help with building up the strategic side of the service.

We have developed a range of policies. So far, we have in place:

  • payments policy
  • ground rules
  • CBUG terms of reference
  • confidentiality policy
  • constitution
