First Camden primary inspected under new Ofsted framework found ‘good’ with ‘outstanding’ features

Date:   10/2/12

Christ Church CofE School NW1, the first primary school in Camden to be inspected under the new Ofsted framework introduced at the beginning of this year, has been ranked ‘good’ with elements that are ‘outstanding’.

The report, published this month, praises teaching at the school in Redhill Street, Regent's Park, as "good overall, with examples of outstanding practice".

Particular mention is made of the headteacher, Paula Aitcheson-Walker, for her "drive, determination and high expectations", along with the able deputy head, ‘well-led' governing body and 'effective subject leaders’.

The report says: "Teaching and learning stimulate pupils’ imaginations, drive learning forward at pace and are the foundation for their good achievement."

The ‘behaviour and safety of pupils’ was ranked as ‘outstanding’ by the inspectors - the highest possible grade. It describes children as "tremendous ambassadors for themselves and the school" with "great respect and a strong moral code".

Simon Walsh, chair of governors at Christ Church NW1, said: "This is a hugely positive and encouraging report. It is a testament to Paula, our head, along with the school’s strong and dedicated leadership team, who are really supported by governors, staff and parents alike.

"Most of all, it is about our outstanding pupils – their enthusiasm, passion and co-operation make this both a very good school and a very happy school."

Elizabeth Wolverson, Director at London Diocesan Board for Schools, added: "The head and staff of Christ Church NW1 school have worked incredibly hard to ensure their pupils are not only safe and happy but also make real progress in their learning. The new Ofsted framework is challenging and the report shows just how well the school serves its community."

Councillor Larraine Revah, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said: "Congratulations to Christ Church NW1 on such a positive report, which reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone at the school."

Notes to editors:

- Notice of just two days was given to the school before the inspectors arrived on 19 January, and everyone swung into action to ensure the process went as smoothly as possible. Throughout the two-day inspection, everyone co-operated fully including staff, parents and pupils who all gave record response rates to the surveys they were asked to complete.

- The report, which was published on 9 February, is available at ofsted.gov.uk/reports

- Christ Church School (Redhill Street NW1) was founded in 1961 and takes pupils from the Regent’s Park estate as well as the general area around Albany Street and Hampstead Road in South Camden

- More than three quarters of the pupils are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds with the majority of them speaking English as an additional language

- A Church of England primary administered by the Diocese of London, the school holds Healthy School status along with Investors in People accreditation

- In the league tables published 15 December 2011, Christ Church NW1 was ranked in the top third of Camden primary schools for results.
