Wanted: Swimmers to smash an existing world record
FREE entry to Kentish Town Sports Centre is on offer as part of an event that will include a world-record breaking attempt.
Visitors to ‘Give it a Go’, Saturday 22 October, can take part in attempting to break the record for the largest number of people treading water in a single location.
The current record was set in 2002 in Finland and stands at 308.
Camden is working with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) to find over 310 competent swimmers to take part.
The event starts in the Willes pool at 12.15pm. Places are limited for safety reasons, register today in person at the centre, or call 020 7974 7000.
Booking online will be available from Sunday 16 October. Visit: http://www.gll.org/centre/kentish-town-sports-centre.asp.
Councillor Tulip Siddiq, Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, Camden Council said:
“We really want to make this a day to remember, and giving visitors to our magnificent sports centre the opportunity to be part of a world record attempt would be a real achievement.
“Kentish Town Sports Centre is the jewel in the crown of Camden’s leisure facilities. I hope that by offering up this unique range of activities we can encourage more of our residents to join the growing family of leisure centre users.”
The ‘Give it a Go’ day includes a range of activities for the entire family:
* Water zorbing;
* Aerobike taster sessions;
* Brazilian dance;
* Nintendo Wii competitions;
* Face painting.
Notes for editors:
1, Due to the nature of the world record attempt, GLL and the Council are requesting that those seeking to take part are competent swimmers. Participants must be over 8 years-old and be able to swim 25 metres in a recognised stroke.
2, To ensure safety, floats will be placed in the Willes pool prior to the attempt. In addition, extra numbers of lifeguards will be present both at the poolside and in the water.
