Camden Council appoints architects for new Chester Balmore housing

Date:

Camden Council has appointed Rick Mather Architects to design a new neighbourhood centre on the Chester Balmore site. The centre, which will be opposite Highgate library, will contain new replacement housing and some retail space.
Rick Mathers Architects were chosen after a shortlist of 12 architects displayed their ideas for the site at an exhibition at Highgate library, where residents were encouraged to give their views.

The replacement housing scheme is part of the Council’s ‘Investing in Camden’s Homes’ programme and will provide high quality sustainable homes for residents. The scheme will mean that more council housing, that is suitable for families, is available on the site. The new housing is part of the Council’s wider vision for the area and will be developed alongside improved community facilities. Part of the funding for the scheme will come from a successful bid the Council made to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The architects are now developing ideas for the site and local residents will be consulted on these proposals before the plans are finalised.

Councillor Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy, Camden Council, said:

"This is really exciting news for Camden residents. The Council is committed to increasing the amount of high quality affordable housing that is available for Camden families and this scheme is helping us meet that commitment. I look forward to working with Rick Mathers Architects to achieve our vision for Chester Balmore."

Gavin Miller, Partner, Rick Mather Architects, said:

“We are delighted to be working with the London Borough of Camden on this exciting new project. We are looking forward to working together to create a development which is appropriate in scale, massing and appearance to its setting and designing a sustainable mixed use development which will embrace the local community. Our initial ideas are a starting point to discussion and we look forward to working with the Council, local stakeholders and residents to fully realise this vision for the Chester Balmore site”.
