New cleaning arrangements for Camden’s estates

Camden’s estates will benefit from new cleaning arrangements after a trial of the scheme in three wards proved successful.
The new arrangements involve using the Council’s street cleansing contractor Veolia to clean the outside communal areas on estates.
This frees up caretakers to focus on their core caretaking duties such as cleaning of internal communal areas, removing graffiti and supporting elderly and vulnerable residents.
When the scheme is rolled out borough wide it is estimated there will be savings in the total cost of the service of £145,000 a year.
Residents on estates in Kilburn, West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage wards have been trialling the new arrangements since October.
Results of a survey in those areas found that 69 percent of residents were satisfied with the caretaking and cleaning services now being provided through the pilot scheme. Nearly 40 percent of residents felt that the overall service had improved in the last six months, against only 18 percent who felt it had deteriorated.
Cllr James King, Executive Member, Housing Services, Camden Council, said:
"This scheme has been shown to deliver high quality, good value caretaking and cleaning services to residents on estates in the pilot areas, which has been reflected in the positive survey results. In rolling the project out to the rest of the borough our caretakers will remain at the core of the service providing support to Camden tenants and leaseholders."
Veolia has been providing cleaning services to Camden Council for more than six years. Their services have led to Camden maintaining its status as one of London’s five cleanest boroughs¹, and in a 2009 residents’ survey showed Camden residents were more satisfied with levels of litter and rubbish collection than in other London boroughs.
