Camden children's eco-art goes on display

Date:
29/06/07

What: Artwork created by Camden schoolchildren from stones, rocks and other natural materials is unveiled.

Where: Triton Square, Euston Road, London NW1

When: Thursday 12 July from 1pm to 2pm.

CAMDEN school children’s earth-friendly art – created with rocks, stones and other natural and found materials – will brighten up a busy public square.

The children from Our Lady’s and St Dominic’s primary schools have been working with a professional theatre designer to create a temporary art installation in Euston’s Triton Square.

Their work has been inspired by Triton Square’s more well-known pieces, including sculptor Anthony Gormley’s ‘Reflection’ and Langlands and Bell’s playful public bench ‘Opening Capture’.

The project gave pupils the opportunity to boost their skills in art and design, work with a professional designer, and to develop their understanding of local architecture and sustainability.

The project was led by Camden Council's Out of School Learning Service and funded by British Land, with support from Broadgate Estates who manage the space.

The pupils taking part in the Triton Square School’s Art project, titled 'Connect', were guided by designer Oliver Hymans from Design Heroine Architects, who lead a series of after school sessions at the schools.

The result is an experimental piece of art, designed specifically for this space.
Cllr Andrew Mennear, Camden Council’s executive member for schools, said:

“The children will be over the moon to see the artwork they created on display to so many people in Triton Square. Not only did they have hours of fun putting this piece together using environmentally friendly materials, they also gained new design and art skills.”
Following the unveiling in Triton Square the artwork will be moved permanently to the two schools.
