Massive investment to transform Camden
Date: Feb 22, 2012
New figures released this week show what we plan to achieve through the first phase of the community investment programme.
Despite suffering some of the largest cuts in London to capital funding from central Government we have created our own ‘plan B’ to find vital funds to invest in schools, community facilities and council homes. This is called the community investment programme (CIP).
Through the CIP we will see:
- One of the capital’s largest social housing programmes in a generation with over 850 new council and shared ownership family homes built in Camden.
- Over 1,200 new private homes built.
- £119m invested in Better Homes repairs to over 10, 000 existing council flats.
- Plans to spend £117m on improving 57 of the borough’s schools and children’s centres, and
- Other much-loved community facilities receiving investment including plans to rebuild or refurbish community centres and securing the long term future of parks and historic buildings.
The Community Investment Programme will work with people in local areas to find ways to solve the borough’s capital problems and secure the long term future of local public services and vital community assets.
Over 80 projects are already being developed identifying sites for redevelopment or sale, but this could be set to grow over the 15 year programme as more opportunities are identified.
For the first time in Camden’s history a full list of non-residential properties the Council owns has been published on the Camden website alongside the current list of sites identified as part of the first phase of projects.
We are calling for communities and other public sector organisations to get involved in a community discussion about sites the council owns. You will have a key role to play in determining priorities for investment to protect what matters most to the borough, through a 12 month series of local events. Camden will support local bodies to drive the regeneration and develop projects that try to reduce the impacts of national and local funding cuts to their local area.
No council homes will be sold off during this programme, tenants will be given reassurances on security of tenure, rents and consultation at a time when many councils are considering changing their housing policies in-line with the Government’s proposed Localism Act.
Please note: The 80 projects are the first phase currently being developed and going through community consultation before approval to proceed. The estimated figures of homes and investment are subject to these consultations and subsequent to change.
