Books, pamphlets and periodicals

We hold over 16,000 books including all standard histories of the locality, immediately adjacent areas and general books on London. No attempt is made to collect all material about national bodies with their headquarters in Camden or every item published locally.

It is not possible to collect biographies of all the people who have lived in the borough except where there are strong local connections. There are however large collections of books, periodicals and other materials on George Bernard Shaw and Charles Dickens.

We also have many small pamphlets, articles press cut from journals and items of ephemera.

We have several hundred periodical titles including newsletters from churches, community and residents' groups, local societies, schools and hospitals. Historical and archaeological periodicals relating to London and about local history, family history and archives. Most files of local periodicals are for recent years only but a number of 19th century parish magazines are held.

Local books on sale from the Centre. A free information sheet with a comprehensive list of local books is also available.
