After the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio more than 150 nations, including the UK, signed an agreement called Agenda 21 which describes how we should all work together to promote sustainable development.

About two-thirds of the issues raised in Agenda 21 can only be addressed by local action tailored to local circumstances. Agenda 21 does not specify these actions but calls upon local authorities the world over to "undertake a consultative process with their populations and achieve a consensus for Local Agenda 21 for their community".

It stresses the need to involve certain key groups: women, young people, ethnic minorities, local businesses, scientists and cyclists.

Local Agenda 21 in Camden

Camden has many problems to be tackled by Local Agenda 21 such as polluted air, insufficient open space and inequality. We need to look at the big picture, connecting things which are normally treated separately: housing, transport, health, education, waste and democracy.

The Local Agenda 21 (LA21) work in Camden started in 1995 and the first action plan was published in May 1999 and updated in 1998.

The review and update of the plan in 2000 was carried out with full public consultation and involvement. A Local Agenda 21 Action Plan was published by the Local Agenda 21 Core Group, which is a mix of local residents and voluntary and community sector organisations and councillors.

The main issues are:
