Introduction
Camden is a Fairtrade Borough in London, the world’s largest Fairtrade city.
The Camden Fairtrade Network brings together agencies, community groups and individuals active in promoting Fairtrade around the borough.
The Camden Fairtrade Network was set up in late 2003 as part of a bid for Camden to achieve Fairtrade Borough status. In September 2004, Camden became the first Fairtrade Borough in north London, and the third in London, to be granted this status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
The Network has continued to encourage the use and promotion of Fairtrade products in Camden and support the London Fairtrade Campaign
Our aims are:
- to provide information for local groups supporting Fairtrade
- to encourage local groups to hold events, especially during Fairtrade Fortnight
- to increase awareness of Fairtrade among consumers and retailers
- to encourage catering businesses to use Fairtrade products
- to support work in schools and universities
- to produce and maintain a Fairtrade Directory for Camden
It is run by a small group of committed volunteers who work together with other Camden residents, businesses, schools, universities, faith groups and other local organisations to increase understanding of Fairtrade and purchase of Fairtrade goods in Camden.
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is about better and more stable prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their lot and have more control over their lives.
